With the Drivers Model, if an organization has resource issues, the issue is identified early in the process through the management briefing that precedes the strategy workshops. As an example, the issues below are from the management briefing for an association.

Based on identifying resources as a critical issue, we customize the situation assessment to identify from employees and other stakeholders barriers to increasing resources and potential strategies for addressing the barriers.

While the input is helpful, this input must be translated into solutions. For some organizations, the first step to solution-building is to establish one or more positioning statements. The sample below is from a non-profit organization which recognized that a key to resource development was to define a compelling and unique focus that captured the hearts and minds of donors.

The positioning statement is pivotal, yet by itself it is too broad for tracking and monitoring progress. Therefore, using the Drivers Model, the planning team establishes a goal statement and measurable objectives. The team will then isolate the barriers and critical success factors, and develop strategies to address them.
