RESULTS:  Setting Specific Measurable Outcomes

Strategic Planning: Leadership Strategies Makes It Work For You!

What are the most important issues that your strategic plan must address? Click one to the right to learn how the Drivers Model, our strategic planning approach, can help you tackle these tough issues.

Setting Specific Measurable Outcomes

In this day and age of accountability, organizations have learned that it is not enough to have broad statements that describe vision, mission and goals. To hold people accountable for results, it is essential that the strategic plan includes specific, measurable outcomes.

The Key Question

When developing your strategic plan, would it be helpful if...

There was a clear process for translating the broad strategy into specific, measurable outcomes?

We use the Drivers Model, a proven approach that helps organizations define their vision (preferred picture of the future), their mission (what you do, for whom do it, and the benefit) and their goals (broad aims). The information below is from a strategy plan for a local government agency.

Vision

Great Homes. Successful Lives.

Mission

To provide affordable housing opportunities and related services to fulfill the needs of those we serve.

Goals

A. Quality Service

Provide opportunities for housing self-sufficiency and personal growth, with exceptional customer service.

B. Stability and Profitability

Maintain a self sustaining, financially sound organization through diversification.

C. Professional Development

Foster an atmosphere for employee development, recognition and teamwork.

While vision, mission and goals frame the picture, these components do not adequately establish measurable results. Through the Drivers Model, the planning team typically sets between two and seven "SMART" objectives for each goal. The objectives must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound, as shown in the sample below.

Conclusion

The Drivers Model identifies strategies for growth by engaging stakeholders in identifying barriers to growth and potential growth strategies, and focusing the planning team on defining positioning statements and measurable outcomes.
